PATA Centre for Responsible Tourism Singapore released podcast episode titled “Responsible tourism, climate adaptation and climate justice”

Singapore, 27th December 2023 – Tourism is increasingly affected by the effects of climate change; global warming and rising sea levels for example, change the wat places look and how local communities go about their daily lives and also the way tourism is being carried out. Climate change is going to have increasingly profound changes to the way tourist destinations and communities do tourism and how tourist activities are carried out.

In the podcast we spoke about how the tourism industry has in the recent few years talked about climate adaptation, which is mainly about increasing adaptive capacity of places and people. As a very big industry with much potential direct and indirect impacts on places and people, there is increased focus on how the tourism industry can contribute to the adaptive actions

Climate adaptation is now seen by some to be a responsibility of the tourism industry, with more expecting tourism and its potential abilities to enhance the ability of places to cope with climatic changes. The often-discussed phenomenon is usually climate mitigation, with more focus and resources seemingly dedicated to it. It is time tourism starts understanding how climate adaptation should also be in its agenda, thus contributing to a fairer world, promoting the idea of climate justice. Afterall, responsible tourism is also tourism that promotes and pushes for ethical tourism too.
